Monica Bancewicz was born and raised in the southside of Glasgow. Monica obtained her BSc from the University of Glasgow in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry. Her final year project was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Richard Hartley and focused on the synthesis of probes to affect levels of the mitochondrial metabolite itaconate, the activity of proteins that itaconate modifies and the consequences this has in certain cancers. Monica joined the group in October to pursue a PhD focusing on the development of sequence-specific polyamide minor groove binders for use as next-generation transcriptional activators in the treatment of triplet expansion diseases.
